The BC Young Fishermen's Gathering will:
-
Provide a space for young fishers to network and relate to like-minded individuals
-
Equip young fishers with the tools and knowledge they need to be successful
-
Highlight the rich history and culture of BC’s fishing industry
-
Encourage mentorship and apprenticeship in the fishing industry
-
Foster transparency, communication and openness across fisheries professions
The BC fishing fleet is “greying,” meaning that the average age of a fisher is increasing – fishers are growing older without being replaced by younger individuals beginning their careers. The BC Young Fishermen's Gathering was inspired by the Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit, a symposium designed to provide information and opportunities for commercial fishermen early in their careers.
